“A musical rife with atonality, creative use of the human voice
and complex musical themes, leaving us with a different kind
of appreciation for what music can do for all of us.”

“FALL” demo by
Gabrielle Stravelli
THE SONGS OF JAY ALAN ZIMMERMAN’S INCREDIBLY DEAF MUSICAL are like candid photographs. In real life, Jay wrote, recorded, and performed these songs from 2004 to 2010 using whatever he could think of: experimentation, video, music theory, recorded loops and sometimes even his own body. Like photos, they capture the real experience of the time in which they were created—the very moments when Jay desperately explored, suffered, questioned. All the accidental rawness, uniqueness, and sometimes unpleasant sounds are left intact, creating a textured score that reveals Jay’s struggle: a struggle with deafness, a struggle to make sense of life, and a struggle to keep creating music without hearing the notes.
